WHAT STOPS YOU: Day-dreaming
WHAT STOPS YOU originally began as designed posters documenting public spaces and questioning what stops the change? There are two ways to get involved:
1. Make more posters and email contact@neringastudio.com to be added to this collection. Students and anyone is welcome, free entry.
2. Be part of the team and design an App where those posters can be shared.
WHAT STOPS YOU (WSY) is a project questioning digital technology and its true use besides making us obsessed with checking our phones every 5 minutes. What is the use of digital technology..? How can we actually make use of that? What does 'useful' mean? This project grew out of these questions but also in response to the observations and experience of teaching young people who grew up with digital media. The key problem of the WSY is: how can we aimlessly encourage the young people to take an active user position rather than remaining a passive consumer of technology? How can the young people engage and be part of this developing world as a generation with their own dreams and aspirations? And these questions derived from the initial Posters raising general questions about the immediate world around us: why do we have homeless, why is there still struggle with drugs or prostitution on the streets, and so on?..
WSY is a concept which could become an App, to basically facilitate those posters as a digital platform available at hand. As an image and #key #word #type driven sharing platform it may be used to focus on serious concerns but also celebrations. In other words, it is a space to document the immediate world around the young people but also a space to reflect and use it to project as a collective voice for the broader public. It feels necessary to create such opportunities for the young people so that they can grow, raise awareness and collectively create their own authoritative voice on issues that we as adults perhaps do not encounter, things that do not make it to the headlines. In time WSY digital archives could serve as direct documentation of the key concerns of today’s young people.
How different is WSY from current Apps which offer image and type editing features on your smart phone?
- Firstly, the overall theme is driven by everyday social, educational, environmental, economic, cultural and other issues so it is not there ONLY for pure entertainment; the use of it is much more socially driven and therefore more intellectually engaging;
- It is used to create awareness on individual and immediate world around the young people issues, which collectively reflect rising issues;
- One has to be an observer to notice what is going on, while through the action of image selection one gains a chance to reflect on the meaning of it further and share it with others; personal and professional growth happens;
- Images collected to be exhibited and shown in support of certain world events touching on a range of issues.
There is an opportunity to help with coding OR app design OR service design to create an integrated app or a website or something in-between, not decided specifically which one but has will be focusing on the experience rather than the medium, inclusive and yet functional.
